ADHD is not trauma, and ADHD is not the pathology we are trying to remove
People with ADHD may bring to EMDR therapy not only differences in attention, regulation, and executive functioning, but also histories of criticism, exclusion, overwhelm, misunderstanding, or environments that did not adequately support their neurotype.
This six-hour workshop applies an ADHD-informed, neurodiversity-affirming lens to EMDR while maintaining the integrity of the eight-phase model.
Understand the ADHD and trauma story
History, targets, neurotype, relationships, environment, resources, and systemic expectations.
Support feeling well and functioning well
Regulate stress and emotion. Relate to self and others. Function with executive and practical supports.
Increase EMDR accessibility
Externalize, titrate, engage, clarify and contextualize across the eight phases.
Considerations across every phase
Considerations include attention, working memory, sensory processing, interoception, imagery, emotional language, regulation, pacing, executive functioning, and environmental supports.
- What needs to change, or has changed, in the memory network?
- What needs to change, or has changed, in the client's current context, resources, and functioning?
You will learn to
- Differentiate ADHD-related characteristics, trauma responses, executive-function support needs, and environmental mismatch.
- Apply the Context-Resource-Adapt framework to EMDR case conceptualization, preparation, and treatment planning.
- Identify resources and accessibility supports that strengthen regulation, relationships, functioning, and engagement.
- Use ADHD-informed considerations across all eight phases without creating a separate or modified EMDR protocol.
Who should attend
