A course for the grown-ups

Share your calm, not their chaos.

When a child is overwhelmed, the most useful thing in the room is a steady adult. This course is about becoming that adult, not by finding the perfect words, but by noticing your own reaction first and choosing what to do with it.

Who it is for

Parents, teachers, counsellors, caregivers: anyone who is the grown-up when a child or teenager is having a hard time. You do not need to have done the other 3A Toolkit courses first, though the Adult edition goes deeper into managing your own stress.

“When little people are overwhelmed by big emotions, it’s our job to share our calm, not join their chaos.”

The course is built on a simple, uncomfortable idea: we may not be the cause of a child’s distress, but we do have an impact on whether we make the situation better or worse. That is offered as an encouragement rather than a criticism. The adult’s response is the part of the interaction the adult can most directly influence, which makes it the best place to start.

Three points of focus

The course does not give you a script. Children, adults, situations and triggers vary too much for one fixed response to work. It gives you a framework you can apply anywhere, in three parts.

1Adult regulation first

Notice your own stress story before you respond to theirs. The foundation everything else rests on, and the part you have the most control over.

2Collaborative recovery

What to actually do in the middle of a big feeling. Regulate, then relate, and why reasoning too early usually makes things worse.

3Healthier habits over time

Practising while calm, so the skill is available when things are not. Reason, reflect, repair.

The co-regulation bridge

The course is organised as a bridge. You start on your own bank, and you walk a child across, from overwhelm toward calm, connection and, eventually, problem-solving. When reasoning is not working, that is the signal to go back a step.

Questions

Is this included in the Family bundle?

No. Co-Regulation is a separate course at $40 a year, bought on its own. The Family bundle covers the Adult, Junior and Youth editions for up to 10 people; this course is not part of it.

Do I need the Adult course first?

No. This course stands on its own. It does point you to the Adult edition where you want to go deeper on managing your own stress and anxiety, since that is the foundation the framework rests on.

Is it for a specific age of child?

It is written for the adult, not the child, and the framework applies from young children through to teenagers. What changes is how you apply it, which the course covers.

Is this therapy?

No. It is educational and is not a substitute for counselling, therapy or medical care. If a child is in distress that goes beyond everyday stress and anxiety, please involve a professional.

How does billing work?

$40 a year. Canadian customers are billed in Canadian dollars, everyone else in US dollars, the same figure. Payment is handled by Paddle.com, the merchant of record, which adds and remits any applicable taxes.

You do not need to be perfectly calm

You only need to be regulated enough to help make the moment better rather than worse.
